Our annual appeal for the people of Belarus allows us to support those still affected by the Chernobyl incident back in 1986.

In 2014 we collected donations from over 100 households and the parents of two schools generously provided additional donations. The customers of Sainsbury's kindly raised £270 which allowed us to purchase toiletries and stationery. For the second year in succession St John's School in Leatherhead gave us an incredible 150 duvets, 90 pillows, bedding and bed sheets. There were so many donations that a grand total of four trips by transit van were needed to transport the goods to the central warehouse at Dover.

The combined total of all donations from other Lions Clubs in the South East necessitated the use of a lorry train (that's the large truck with an equally large trailer shown in the picture below) to carry the 1200 boxes of goods safely to Gomel in south-east Belarus.

If you would like to learn more about how the Lions' work helps the people of Belarus there is some additional information on the Lions Belarus Trust website.

We are looking for the loan of empty garage space from May to August this year to store items for our 2015 Belarus Appeal. It's a great cause so please let us know if you can help.
